For making DIY wicking garden beds we will explain the procedure in a step-by-step process.

1. Construct A Raised Box.

For building a raised box choose wood and make a raised box out of it. For this procedure cut the wood into long strips and join them with the help of a hammer and nails. Join the wood strips and turn them into rectangular shapes when you construct this box then paint color on its outside and put a strain along the top of the inside.

When you construct a raised box then the second step is to locate and level this box and place it in your garden.

2. Build a Water Containment system In Your Raised Box.

Firstly wrap the plastic sheet on the lower edge with the help of nails. Then level with small stones but do not attach plastic to the top of the box because water could not run into your box when the box is full.

Then for watering, you needed an instrument to water your wicking garden bed so for this purpose firstly buy a PVC pipe from the market, superstore or Bazar. Then create a small hole in this PVC pipe so that water escapes and you can water your plants. After having a pipe with holes drill a hole insert the pipe into the raised box and water your plants.

3. Cover up Stones And PVC Pipe.

Then after inserting the pipe cover it up with a weed block material or with a green sheet so that water can flow in both directions.  And water is stored in the wicking bed for days because water is stored in the gaps between the PVC pipe and small stones.

4. Insert Wood Slates.

If you want to protect your wicking garden bed from the insect’s attack or you want to provide support to the plants by keeping them away from the frost on the chilly nights then insert wood slats into your raised box. These extras will be very helpful for you if you are a beginner in gardening.

5.  Fill Up Raised Box With The Soil Fully.

Then after analyzing that water is freely run into the box, fill up the raised box with the soil. When you realize that water from the top of the depression as it passes from the barrier and moves into the soil then your wicking bed is perfectly made. As you can water your plants and also your wicking bed can retain water.

6.  Start Growing Plants.

After filling soil in the raised box sow seeds of your favorite plant. You just needed to check the water level and check it with a dipstick if the water level is low then water your plant. You will realize that seed will germinate into a seedling, and the seedling will transform into a mature plant. A mature plant is formed and you can pick up fruits from it and eat.

A DIY Wicking Garden Bed Step By Step Process

1. A Galvanized Steel Raised Bed.

For constructing a wicking garden bed buy a galvanized steel raised bed from the market bazaar or superstore. This galvanized steel raised bed is a perfect choice because you are using it as the base of the wicking garden bed.

2. Place Galvanized Raised Bed on The Desired location.

Then the next step is that place galvanized raised bed on the exact location because when soil is filled in the bed it will be immovable. So our suggestion for you is that place galvanized raised bed in the desired location.

3. Level Wicking Bed.

After placing the wicking bed on the desired location level it is because the wicking bed holds water at a specific height. When your wicking bed is not leveled properly your water is not drained properly so that the upper side is too dry and the lower side is soggy and wet. So leveled properly your wicking bed as it can hold water.

4. Lay Down A Plastic Sheet.

Then after leveling your wicking bed lay down a plastic sheet in your wicking garden bed. Properly fix the plastic sheet on your wicking garden bed with the help of hammer nails.

5. Insert A Bulkhead Connector.

Drill a hole with the help of a driller, Then insert a small bulkhead connector on the galvanized steel raised bed.  Your hole is at least 30cm so for the watering inlet, you can enter a PVC pipe. So that you do not need to push plants away or water too high you just water your plant with the water inlet.

6. A Thin Layer Of Coarse Scoria.

Then the next step is to lay down a thin layer of coarse scoria over the pond liner. After entering the pipe for watering lay down a pond liner and then add a thin layer of coarse scoria. This pond liner will protect your pipe from damage.

7. Clam A Pond Liner.

After adding a thin layer of coarse scoria then clamp a pond liner on the top of the galvanized raised bed. And level your coarse scoria properly and in a fine way.

8. Lay Down A Geotextile Fibre.

After leveling your coarse scoria layer then lay down a layer of geotextile fiber and wrap it carefully around the water inlet. This fiber is very helpful for you so that no soil can be entered into the coarse scoria layer. Level your geotextile fiber properly if the coarse scoria layer is not properly leveled then firstly level it and then level geotextile fiber.

9. Fill soil In The Wicking Bed.

Fill your raised wicking bed with potting soil not with a garden because garden soil could not provide all the essential nutrients which are necessary for plant growth.  Fill potting soil in your raised wicking bed fully and then cut off extra pond liner with the help of a scissor.
